Centrifugal Fan Direct Drive
Product Overview
A centrifugal fan direct drive removes the belt from a centrifugal fan. Belt drives are common on centrifugal fans, but the belt is a wear part: it slips, stretches and cracks after a few thousand hours. Site maintenance staff often set tension too tight, which wears the bearings, or too loose, which lets the belt slip. In this unit the motor shaft is connected directly to the impeller, and the only routine maintenance item is impeller cleaning. It is used in kitchen exhaust, laboratory exhaust and equipment cooling where downtime has to be avoided.
Core Advantages
No belt, pulley or tensioning mechanism. Maintenance after installation is limited to impeller cleaning. There is no belt tension to check or reset, which removes both the belt cost and the maintenance visit from the schedule.
30% shorter than a belt-driven unit of the same duty. Because the motor sits on the impeller shaft rather than beside it, the fan is about 30% shorter. In a plant room or a duct shaft with limited length, this changes what fits.
Keyed impeller-to-shaft joint with lock nut. The impeller is keyed to the motor shaft and locked with a nut, and the assembly is dynamically balanced so overall vibration is low. At the direct-coupled speed there is no belt slip to reduce air volume.
B5 flange motor mounting directly on the volute side plate. The motor mounts on the volute side plate through a B5 flange, which keeps the unit compact and removes the motor slide rails and belt guard that a belt drive needs.

Quality Control
The impeller is fixed to the motor shaft and the assembly is packed as one unit with anti-vibration packing. The volute interior is braced to prevent deformation in transit. Packing is a wooden case. Because speed can only be changed by VFD on a direct drive unit, the motor rating is checked against the specified duty point before dispatch.
FAQ
Q: Can the speed of a direct drive centrifugal fan be adjusted?
A: Yes, by VFD. On a direct drive fan the fan speed is the motor speed, and a VFD changes motor speed by changing supply frequency. Note that a direct drive fan cannot be speed-adjusted by changing pulley size; speed adjustment is by VFD only.
Q: Which lasts longer, direct drive or belt drive?
A: The direct drive has a simpler mechanical arrangement and fewer failure points. But on a direct drive the motor bearings carry the full impeller weight and the axial air-stream load, so bearing quality matters more. Branded bearings are used, with normal service life of 20,000 hours or more.
